Dig Preparation
Before you begin your test pit dig you will first need to complete Workshop 13: DIY Dig, which explains how to excavate and record a test pit. Once completed undertake Workshop 14: Safe and Sound, which will guide you through the health and safety measures you must take, what equipment you will need and how to record what you find.

Before undertaking your dig you must first complete the Health and Safety Form
There is also a downloadable version you can print and keep with you on your dig and a risk assessment template.
You will need to make sure you have adequate equipment to excavate and record your test pit. We have created a list to help you gather what you need.

Finds Processing and Dig Reporting

Hopefully, you will find lots of exciting things when you excavate, as well as learning the archaeological process and having fun! The information below will help you process and care for the artefacts you recover.
An important aspect of all archaeological fieldwork is recording what you find and then sharing it with others, so they can also utilise it. We have created a bespoke recording page for you to input all the information from your dig.
If you’re unsure about how archaeologists use the information from test pits why not try Workshop 9: Tracing Places, which explores this in a bit more detail.
